What a relief that this work was left unfinished and disappeared. The music is third-rate, and the orchestration is extremely rough, massive, and absolutely does not convey Shostakovich's style.

If I havr a criticism of this playing, it is that he holds back his "passion" too much. He opts for control at the expense of excitement. Somehow, Cliburn kept the tempo within boundd but still imbued his playing with a more personal expression. Still,he plays beautifully!

Gracias.

It is extremely difficult (nigh impossible) to appreciate Penderecki except for live performance or extremely high fidelity (nutcase) audio. Penderecki is entirely about the nature, perception of, and emotional response to pure sound. Without the sound overtones of live performance his music largely misses its essence.

It’s honestly crazy what people can show and represent through music. How they can make the audience feel. I remember my orchestra teacher showing us this piece, our first reactions were crazy. Such a beautiful yet terrifying piece.

I've listened to recordings of this before, but in particular watching it is a different experience. The way no one moves in unison - as opposed to the typically near medical synchronization of most performances - replicates the frantic and manic nature of the song. Like each performer is experiencing their own, independent crisis, drowned alongside the noise.

Salonen certainly knows the orchestra; and yet he is another example of a composer who likes to pretend that the 20th century never happened. This is music of the late 19th century. It's trying so hard to be profound; with all of the necessary tropes. And that makes it even more difficult to take.
